Professor Yonghoon Son received his B.S. in Landscape Architecture from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Seoul National University in 1998 and his M.L.A. in Environmental Landscape Architecture from the GSES at SNU in 2003. In the same year, he entered the Laboratory of Forest Landscape Planning, Dept. of Forest Science, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of Tokyo, where he earned his PhD in 2007. Following the completion of his doctoral studies, he worked as a researcher at the Japan Travel Bureau Foundation, a leading research institute specialising in tourism policy and planning. He subsequently served as an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Environmental Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Chiba University, Japan. Since 2012, he has been a faculty member at Seoul National University, where he currently serves as Professor in the Department of Environmental Design, Graduate School of Environmental Studies. His research focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of natural environments and green spaces, with particular interests in park and green space planning, rural landscape planning, national parks, and the conservation and management of scenic and cultural landscapes. He also serves as Director of the Center for Landscape and Garden Studies at the Environmental Planning Institute of SNU.  In addition, he contributes to national policy and practice through various professional roles. His academic vision is to expand the scope and role of landscape planning as a medium for fostering sustainable coexistence between people and nature. He is particularly interested in advancing landscape planning methodologies that integrate field-based qualitative research with spatial big-data analytics, while educating future landscape professionals equipped with both creative thinking and practical expertise to address emerging societal and environmental challenges.

1994년 서울대학교 농업생명과학대학 조경학과에 입학하여 농학사를 취득하였고, 2001년 서울대학교 환경대학원 환경조경학과에 진학하여 2003년 조경학 석사학위를 받았다. 같은 해 4월 일본 도쿄대학교대학원 농학생명과학연구과 산림과학전공 삼림풍치계획학연구실에 입학하여 2007년 농학박사(Ph.D.) 학위를 취득하였다. 박사학위 취득 후 일본의 관광정책 연구기관인 재단법인 일본교통공사에서 연구원으로 근무하였으며, 이후 일본 국립 지바대학 원예학연구과 녹지환경학과 부교수를 역임하였다. 2012년 서울대학교 환경대학원 환경조경학과 교수로 부임하였으며, 현재는 서울대학교 환경대학원 환경설계학과 교수로 재직하고 있다. 현재 조경계획연구실을 운영하며 국토의 자연환경과 녹지의 보전 및 활용을 주요 연구 주제로 삼고 있다. 특히 공원·녹지계획, 농촌공간계획, 국립공원, 명승 등 경관자원의 보전과 관리, 활용 방안에 관한 연구를 수행하고 있다. 또한 서울대학교 환경계획연구소 경관정원연구센터장으로서 경관정원 분야의 연구 과제를 발굴하고 성과를 확산하는 데 힘쓰고 있다. 이와 함께 국토대전 문화경관 심사위원, 국가유산청 전문위원, 국립공원 Green List 전문가 평가단, 국가산업단지 심의위원 등으로 활동하고 있다. 나아가 사람과 자연의 지속 가능한 상생을 이끄는 매개로서 조경 계획의 역할과 연구 범위를 확장하고자 한다. 또한 현장지향적 질적 연구와 공간빅데이터 기반의 양적 분석을 융합한 연구방법론을 발전시키고, 이를 바탕으로 미래 사회가 요구하는 창의적이고 실천적인 조경 전문인재를 양성하는 데 관심을 두고 있다.
